Happiness comes from being in the present, living here, now and really feeling what you are experiencing in any given moment. So often we are waiting for the next moment or experience to happen so that we can bring about feelings of joy, fulfilment and happiness. But what about the moment you are experiencing now? How you can you take this moment, right here and now and be happy?
What stops us from being happy now?
That non stop monkey mind is what prevents us from feeling happy now; from feeling fulfilled and satisfied. Why? Because we are always in thought about the future; thinking or worrying about what is yet to come, instead of seeing, feeling, and experiencing what is happening now.
So how do you feel happy now?.
Well by focusing on the now; living the in the moment is how you get happy now! Where is your attention,? Whatever you may be doing, do it by being present. How often do we do such basic things like make a cup of tea, have a shower, put on our clothes, just so that we can get to the next moment, the next situation, the outcome of what we are currently doing. What if you not only looked to the next moment of say, drinking that tea, but while making that tea you were truly with that experience too, not just observing yourself making the tea, but actually feeling yourself make the tea, and enjoying the experience of making that tea too. Eckhart Tolle is a master at explaining this and you can check out more of his work. I loved listening to him and Oprah Winfrey talk about being in the present, and youtube has loads of great videos they have recorded together, have a look here.
Take the focus of the future
If we live by always thinking about that next moment we will never find that feeling of being fulfilled and happy. To feel happy now you have really got to focus on the task at hand, enjoying it, connecting to it and living for the now instead of living for the future.
Method to Feel Happy Now:
Get out of your mind and into the moment
Do this by asking yourself, 'Am I breathing', for sure you will be, but it will bring your focus to it with more strength.
Notice your breath and come to the task at hand.
Feel the way your body is moving, experience the actually task that is at hand (that may be simply washing the dishes).
Start to really connect to what is really good about what you are doing now. It may be the feel of the water, the look at of the window, or the feeling knowing you are achieving something right here, right now.
Keep practicing. This is not an overnight transformation but a practice is helps us connect to the now, and experience life fully.
